For those in the market for a place to retire, some locations are better suited for others, according to a recent survey by Apartments.com. In search of the best destinations for snowbirds and retirees, the online apartment search site ranked cities and locations based on several factors particular to retirees: inventory of affordable apartments, thriving economy, number of retirees, weather, and flexible leasing options for short or long stays.
The site also mapped the average rents for a two-bedroom apartment in each of the top-10 cities with Austin, Texas, at $1,204 per month, topping the list.
“We wanted to look at elements that make a city attractive to both part-time residents and to today’s retiree who is active and seeking a vibrant community with weather that lets them stay active,” said Dick Burke, president of Apartments.com.
Meeting the climate requirement, the top five locations all fall in Arizona, Texas or Nevada with Las Vegas, Scottsdale (AZ), San Antonio and Phoenix following Austin at the top of the list.
Rounding out the top-10 were Dallas, Jacksonville (FL), Plano (TX), Overland Park (KS), and Mesa (AZ).
The results did not come without some surprises, Burke said.
“There are some surprises on the list—the biggest one being that typical snowbird cities in southern Florida were edged out by cities in Arizona and Texas. This is because our list takes into account more than just sunshine.
